Depot Road Redesign
The Depot Road Bike Lane Redesign is a human-centered transportation project focused on improving safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians near Chabot College. Through field observations, community surveys, traffic data analysis, and engineering standards, our team proposed a road diet that introduces a combination of Class II and Class IV bike lanes to balance safety, cost, and neighborhood impact. The design prioritizes physical protection where risk is highest, such as near curves and the school zone, while preserving parking and traffic flow in residential areas. By following MUTCD, NACTO, and FHWA guidelines and incorporating feedback from City of Hayward and SFMTA engineers, this project demonstrates how data-driven, community-informed design can transform an unsafe roadway into a safer, more sustainable corridor for everyday transportation.
